FM Divisions
What divisions are there at Florida Multigun? We run a hybrid of rulesets, as we believe in keeping the sport moving forward and adjusting divisions to keep up with current firearm technology.
Tac Ops has traditionally been one of the most active divisions in our match. Iron sighted 9mm pistols, AR rifles with a Low Powered Variable Optic (LPVO) and tube fed shotguns rule in Tac Ops. If you don’t have a LPVO and only a red dot for your rifle then you could play in Limited. Limited division participation has dropped significantly after the growth in the LPVO scope market. Also if you look at match participation over the years Open division has increased as red dots on pistols and box fed shotguns have become more reliable and available.
Open division is anything goes and is dominated by race everything, including red dot sighted pistols and magazine fed shotguns. Open division has been our most popular division at our matches recently.
Not more than 5 years ago, red dots on pistols were limited to very fancy (expensive) guns and only early adopters were running them. Now micro red dots come in all shapes and sizes and are found on off the rack pistols. If you go to a gun counter at any retail store there are bound to be 50% of the pistols either with a dot or with a plate to mount a red dot. They are getting so common and reliable that they have made their way into law enforcement and military applications as well. I would suspect that a lot of people reading this blog might even EDC a pistol with a red dot on it.
What we did was create a division between Tac Ops and Open to keep up with technology but maintain historical divisions. The problem we saw was that many new shooters were showing up to a match with a rifle with a red dot, pump shotgun and a pistol with a red dot and were having to be put into Open. You aren’t going to win a match right from the beginning but the jump into the sport was too great for just starting out. The pistol red dot was a technological jump for divisions, so we created an Open light or modified division called “Carry Optics” which floats right between Tac Ops and Open. We allow Carry Optics to have a slide mounted red dot on the pistol, and few more modifications on a tube fed shotgun with rifle being an LPVO scoped version. Our Carry Optics is a play on the success of the same named USPSA division without cannibalizing Tac Ops and Open.

We also have 5th Saturday matches where we allow PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) and Long Range Rifles. Check with the match director and staff on firearms for those specific fun matches.
