Suppression
The myth, the legend.
Save your ears and mine too.
At our local matches you will see more than a few shooters using sound suppressors. A suppressor is usually an item that inspires awe and questions at the same time. Our most common questions are:
Are we allowed to use those here?
Why do you use that?
Where can I get one?
I can’t speak for all of you reading this post but I will say for me, having a suppressor on my personal rifle is a must. Signature reduction will save your life. Plain and simple.
Since I run my personal rifles at our matches, my suppressor comes with!
Why? I run my 3 gun builds the same as I would run the rifle in real life. I look at 3 gun as a training environment. I want to test my real world gear against the timer and myself. That means suppressors and flashlights on everything.
Is that the ethos behind gaming and more specific gaming centric rifles?
No it is not.
However, if you were looking for a place to run your real gear (including your suppressors) than we fully encourage you to do so with us here at Florida Multigun.
Items to note when using suppressors on your rifles:
1. Buffer/Spring Adjustment. Heavier buffer is usually needed to make the suppressor run more effectively. Generally an H2 buffer is recommended. I use Geissele Super 42 spring/H2 combos in all my rifles. The VLTOR A5 system is also know for helping suppressors run better.
2. Gas in the face AKA Cat Eyes. Most rifles we see are DI. As a result, there will be additional gases in your face if you suppress the rifle. This can be avoided with several aftermarket charging handles specifically designed to alleviate cat eyes. PRI gas buster is a personal favorite. Silencerco makes one too. Others exist too. FYI, not an issue on most piston driven systems.
3. Adjustable gas blocks. Want the rifle to be even smoother? Adjustable gas blocks make it tunable to your suppressor and ammunition. I don’t use these but Jake does and he likes them. Superlative Arms makes the one most people gravitate towards. Tune and shoot smoother.
4. DOPE. With a suppressor your DOPE will change. You need to have 2 sets of data. With a suppressor and without. The velocity of the round with and without the suppressor will vary based on the rifle/suppressor/ammo combination. Be aware and know your holds.
5. Brands. Not all suppressors are created equal. Fact of life team. I can only speak from personal experience so here are my two picks. Surefire and DeadAir. I beat these things to DEATH and they work flawlessly. Great warranty from DeadAir with solid customer service. Do your HW before you buy. Ask questions!!!
6. Tax Stamps. Keep a copy on your phone or in your case at all times. These are NFA items. Be smart and always keep you paperwork handy.
